Concept Description
DYNAMICAL COUNTERPOINT III holds implied motion in equilibrium, composing a spatial counterpoint in which a bisected circular form appears to roll across a twisted plane, its trajectory arrested at a single point of contact—as if time itself had been suspended.
The upper pair consists of two circular fragments derived from a single circle cut by a centre-crossing arc. Offset from their original alignment, they enter shifted phases, establishing a visual cadence of tilt, oscillation and suspension. Their black dyed linen surfaces absorb light and lend the membranes mass and inertia, while the faintly visible inner frames reveal them as tensioned structures rather than solid bodies. Copper-coloured high-gloss cut faces sharpen the incision, condensing visual tension into reflective lines of force.
The pale blue-green plane, although initially read as bent wood, follows the same architectonic logic: linen stretched over a wooden frame. Through right-angled torsion, it becomes a structural ground that stabilises the work as a self-supporting whole. It also serves as a perceptual ground for the circle’s imminent roll, defining its direction and modulating the shifting centre of gravity. At the point of contact, this dynamic potential remains poised in calibrated imbalance.
Transposing musical counterpoint into architectonic order, the work constructs a contrapuntal condition through which independent rhythms, phase shift and latent motion take form as Space (in)Tension without being enacted.
