Concept Description

STRETCHING (in)TENSION gives form to spatial curvature and extension through tension.

Within the work, a single sheet of linen spans an architectonic wooden frame, forming a continuous membrane that expands at both ends and narrows towards the centre, as if a spherical body were stretched laterally. This configuration establishes a physical field in which material strain and visual perception coincide. On this tensioned surface, a chequered pattern composed of stepped tonal gradations registers the deformation: its order elongates into stripe-like distortion as force is redistributed across the curved plane.

At the centre, the black painted region appears as a rupture within space. Its density absorbs tonal variation and suppresses stable depth, drawing the eye inward while refusing to resolve as either surface or aperture.

STRETCHING (in)TENSION does not depict stretched space. Rather, spatial curvature and extension take form as Space (in)Tension within a condition of structural deformation and visual displacement. Just as the curvature of the Earth exceeds immediate perception at the scale of everyday experience, such curvature and extension are rarely grasped directly; here, however, they become perceptible as space ceases to appear as a neutral container and inclines towards form.
